Berberidaceae family. Thorny shrub is 1.5-2 m tall. There are some trifoliate spines on lightly branched branches. The bark of young shoots is yellowish, and becomes gray after the winter. The leaves are alternate, stalked, up to 10 cm long, elliptical, somewhat leathery, finely toothed, grow beams on short shoots. Inflorescence - a brush, consisting of 10-25 pale yellow fragrant flowers. Fruit is dryish, of elliptical shape, red, sour. It flowers in May - June. The fruits ripen in August - September. It grows as an ornamental shrub in parks, hedges, also on the edge of the forest on rocky, but humus-rich soils of the steppe and forest-steppe zones, finally - on the territory of Ukraine and Belarus. The bark, flowers and leaves are harvested in the spring, after flowering, fruit - in autumn, the roots - in the early spring or late autumn.
Applied in the form of tea in the endometrium, uterine hypotonia after birth, with colic and gallstones, cholecystitis - in the cold period (lowers the tone of the gall bladder and decreases the spasms), constipation, and catarrh of the spastic colon. It improves blood circulation, stops bleeding. To 1 cup of boiling water is given a teaspoon of powdered bark, flowers or leaves, and infused for 10 minutes. When only roots are taken, should be boiled for 10 minutes. One should drink 1 glass in the morning and evening, sips. Infusion of Berberis is used with gout, rheumatism, lumbago. Like quinine, it reduces fever, has a calming effect and antimicrobial.
The juice from the fruit of barberry helps with pneumonia, fever, and cough. One should drink 1-2 tablespoons per day (rich in vitamin C). Reduces fever, soothes thirst. Decoction is prepared in a ratio of 2.5:1, 5:5 when enlarged liver from a mixture of bark of barberry (from roots and new shoots), celandine herbs and mint leaves. One tablespoon of the mixture of boiled water and leave is infused for 30 minutes. Drink 2-3 cups a day. With the lack of function of the pancreas 2 tablespoons of the bark of barberry and 1 tablespoon of licorice root is poured 0.5 liters of water, infused for all night, in the morning is boiled for 5-7 minutes, filtered and drink half a cup three times a day. Since berberine alkaloids (and similar action by oxycontin and palmatine) contained in the bark of barberry, remind opium alkaloids by their construction (just do not have a narcotic effect), liquid extract from the bark of barberry is used for treatment of addiction caused by abuse of morphine. For this is used 25-30 drops of the liquid extract on a glass of water every 3 hours.
Decoction is prepared in the ratio 2:2:2:1 from a mixture of barberry root, dandelion root, wild chicory roots and bark of buckthorn with cholecystitis, cholangitis. 1 tablespoon of the mixture is boiled in one cup of water for 15 minutes and drink 3 cups a day.
